Episode 79 - Sweet Rice from Sikh Langar Celebrating 550 years! Guru Nanak started the Sikh religion as well as the institution of Langar, a community kitchen and a great equalizer where rich and poor sit together to eat the same food free of cost. Our guests Navpreet Singh, Siddakk Chatrath and Harbaldeep Singh introduce us to Langar as they cook a very popular snack/dessert found often at Sikh Gurdwaras around the world. 1 cup rice wash and soak 5 minutes 2 cups hot water Approx 1 cup jaggery or 3/4 cup sugar 2 Tblsp golden raisins Roasted cashews Optional pinch of saffron Boil water add sugar stir until sugar dissolves and water somewhat boiling. Add rice very cautiously a little a time until all rice is added. Leave to simmer for approx 20 minutes, checking occasionally. Add saffron Lastly add raisins and cashew. Cardamom. Stir. Rice grains remain separate with a little gloss, ready to serve. www.actontv.org
