HEALTH CARE BLIND SPOTS: MEN AND BREAST CANCER Last year, I wrote about this: https://www.statnews.com/2023/10/27/breast-cancer-awareness-pink-ribbon-blue-men/ When we think of breast cancer, most of us immediately think of women—but there’s an important blind spot we can’t afford to overlook: Men get breast cancer too. While breast cancer in men is rare—accounting for less than 1% of all breast cancer cases—this doesn’t diminish the need for awareness. Delayed diagnosis and limited public awareness can lead to poorer outcomes for men who are diagnosed. As a health communication professional, I’ve seen firsthand how healthcare blind spots like this can cost lives. That’s why it’s crucial that our awareness campaigns include men, ensuring that both men and women know the signs, symptoms, and risks of breast cancer. Men may not be part of the majority, but that doesn’t make their health any less important. Let’s continue advocating for inclusive health messaging that reaches everyone, regardless of numbers. vivianbirchallmedia@gmail.com
